Leagues II - Trailblazer: Clue Scroll Changes

The below change is now live as of November 19th 14:15 GMT.

Updated November 18th 17:45 GMT:

After reviewing your feedback regarding the most recent proposal for Clue Scroll changes in Leagues II – Trailblazer, we will be removing the need to juggle Clue Scrolls with a hotfix that will go live tomorrow, November 19th, at 14:00 Game Time.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for being so engaged in the discussions surrounding Clue Scrolls within the League and for getting involved in the feedback process!

It’s never easy for us to make these kind of changes, especially when we’re already so far into the League. We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting a firm decision so you can continue doing Clue Scrolls, and we apologise for any frustration the wait has caused.

We also know that we should have given Clue Scrolls extra development time to ensure this feature was up to our standards at launch, instead of prioritising other areas of the League. This is something we'll be taking on board when it comes to the next League - and we plan to do better in future.

Original post:

Earlier this week we proposed some changes to the way clue scrolls work. There was a lot of feedback (thanks!) and it was clear that you felt that what we were offering wasn't the best solution.

Many of you felt that our proposal favoured Unnatural Selection too much, and you didn't want to see any nerf to the advantages offered by Treasure Seeker.

You made it clear that you weren't happy with our plans for changing the way clue scrolls function, having previously said that we wouldn't make notable changes. This meant that a lot of you had planned your area unlocks to optimise clue completion rates based on the information we had shared.

We've been digging into your feedback and we've been discussing other viable alternatives, such as allowing a relic re-roll, giving players the benefits of both relics, or even removing the guaranteed clue scroll drop change offered by Unnatural Selection.

Ultimately, we realise that making changes of this nature would cause more issues than they'd solve, and so we aren't proceeding with any of those alternatives.

We're delighted that so many of you are having an amazing time, but we know that there's still frustration with the way clue scrolls are working. We'd be content to leave things as they are now, and to take the learnings from this League and apply it to the next League. If that's what you'd prefer.

Alternatively, we do have another proposal which might resolve your clue scroll frustrations without adversely affecting the balance between Treasure Seeker or Unnatural Selection.

We propose changing the way clue scroll steps work so that the steps do not reset until you receive a clue casket.

Here's an example:

  • You loot a hard clue scroll. You complete the first clue step. That's one step toward the clue casket.
  • Oh no! Step two requires you to go to a region you haven't unlocked. You drop the clue scroll but the clue step is intact. You're still one step towards a clue casket.
  • You get another hard clue scroll to replace the dropped one. Drat! That's also for a region you haven't unlocked. Better drop that too. You're still one step towards a clue casket.
  • You get another hard clue scroll to replace the newly dropped clue. You're able to complete the first step of this clue. However, your previous clue step was stored, so you're two steps towards a clue casket!
  • And so on. Until you get yourself a clue casket and the loot inside.

This would effectively mean that we remove the need to 'juggle' clue scrolls. The change should increase the completion rate for all players whilst Treasure Seeker will still prove advantageous for those who chose it. If you planned your area progression according to where you might better complete clue scrolls then you'll benefit too. You might still want to juggle clue scrolls, and you'd benefit from it, but it's no longer necessary to do so.

We're putting this to you on a Friday evening to get a weekend's worth of feedback so that we might be able to quickly arrive at a decision on Monday once we're back in the virtual office. As always, thank you for the feedback and for helping to improve Old School.

As we said earlier this week, a blog answering your many Leagues II – Trailblazer questions is still on the way! BUT while work on that continues, we’d like a quick chat about the way Clue Scrolls work in Trailblazer.

We’ve tried to avoid making big changes to a League once it’s live, and the competitive spirit of the game mode is something we are conscious of maintaining. But ultimately we want to make sure you’re having fun. We’ve heard loud and clear that many of you are simply not enjoying Trailblazer’s current implementation of Clue Scrolls, regardless of which Relic you chose.

It’s currently possible to receive Clue Scroll steps that you can’t complete because they require access to an unavailable or unlocked area. This means you either have to drop the clue and hope to get lucky with another, or juggle them around between drops!

We propose changing Clue Scrolls so they’re completable in the areas you’ve unlocked.

We previously said it would take too much time to make this change, but by restricting the number of possible steps on offer in each region it’s possible to change this in next week’s game update.

This means:

  • Clue Scrolls will only give steps that are completable in the regions you’ve unlocked.
  • Clue Scrolls will be limited to a much smaller list of clues and riddles to solve compared to the main game.
  • Clue Scroll clues and riddles will still be randomised, but it is highly likely you’ll be repeating the same ones when completing multiple Clue Scrolls.

This change would apply across all of Leagues II - Trailblazer, regardless of which Relic you selected.

We understand this benefits both Treasure Seeker and Unnatural Selection users, similar to how the Killcount requirement change at God Wars Dungeon impacted anyone that had unlocked Asgarnia. Bearing in mind that we’ve made similar Quality of Life changes before, we hope you feel this update is a fair compromise that ensures everyone can have even more fun playing Trailblazer, while avoiding making drastic changes to the Relics you’ve already chosen.
